Bringing accredited, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning to North Yorkshire and the North East....
When working with young people in a mental health or educational capacity, Positive Progress has always understood the need to be creative and engaging. All too often young people can disengage from services and not receive the help they need to overcome emotional and behavioural issues.
Our team has worked and trained with EAGALA, (the internationally recognised accrediting body for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and learning) and are able to bring to North Yorkshire and the North East, a meaningful package of support.
Who will benefit from this programme?
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy works with young people who have disengaged from other mental health services and need a different approach, having horses present merely heightens the impact of the psychotherapy and the level of contact and engagement.
Equine Assisted Learning is aimed at young people who would benefit from an alternative behaviour support package, the horses' reactions lend immediacy to the process and the picturesque, rural environment at the centre means that there is a safe space in which to engage in the process.
EAL & EAP have evidenced impact across all ages; however, our courses of therapy and learning are primarily aimed at children and adolescents. We have found EAP/EAL sessions to be incredibly powerful. Positive Progress has successfully worked with a wide range of needs:
- Behavioural issues
- Emotional and social issues
- Self esteem
- Anxiety and OCD
- Autistic spectrum condition
- Substance misuse
- Transition work
- Family therapy
What is it?
EAP/EAL incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a mental health professional and an equine professional, working with clients to address treatment goals. EAP is an experiential modality – this means that clients learn about themselves and others by participating in the activities with the horses, and then processing/discussing thoughts, beliefs, patterns of behaviour and attitudes with the treatment team.
In practical terms, EAP/EAL uses a team of two professionals working with a young person and a horse/ horses. There is no riding, the horses are there as part of the team, allowing us and the client to see what is happening in the session at a deeper level.
Why horses?
Horses are sensitive to non verbal communication and respond to what messages the client gives them in the moment.
Often in therapeutic situations, there can be incongruence between what is spoken and what the body is telling the therapist or educator, whilst we can pick up on these signals, horses will instantly react, detecting emotions and intentions and responding accordingly.
These responses give the client and the treatment team information, information that brings awareness of current patterns and motivates change to new ones.
Many clients will say "the horse is stubborn, the horse doesn't like me" the lesson to be learned is that we interpret our reality according to our experience and as we change ourselves, the horses will respond differently.
We offer EAP and EAL at our centre in North Yorkshire and as a mobile service in the North East and West Yorkshire.
This is an effective, nurturing way to bring about real change and help young people on the next step of their journey.
